Walid El Masri aims to transform the singularity of a commonplace object such as the chair, by employing animated marks and a disquieting colour palette. By juxtaposing the familiar into an object of anger and discomfort, he elicits a sentiment of apprehension in the viewer and invites them to contemplate their subjective bias.
Prior to receiving his BA from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Damascus, Syria in 2005, Walid El Masri practiced mosaic-making between 1994-2000. During this period, he studied at the summer academy at Darat Al-Funun in Amman, Jordan, under the guidance of expressionist Syria painter Marwan Kassab-Bachi. El Masri currently lives and works in Paris, France.
